Our team

CEO - Scott Krywulycz

I started in business at the age of 15 using a carpet cleaning machine, a few mates and a paid contract to clean the carpets at local schools during the holiday period. I thrived on the independence, freedom and variety of having a business provided me from an early age. With an interest only in sport at school, I left with a rugby league contract and a job in my entrepreneurial father’s business.

I competed at a state and semi-professional level for 12 years as a rugby league player winning 7 grand finals, privilideged to captain some of Australia’s best players. Learning a lot about team work, discipline, mental toughness and coaching techniques from some of the best and worse in sport and rugby league. It was a real honour to play this physically demanding sport and learn the many lessons about what the body is capable of when the mind is in the right environment.

During this period I took a more demanding role in the family business moving from ‘factory boy’ in charge of sweeping, to being on the tools, into customer service, accounts and then Director with over 70 staff and a $15 million plus turnover per year. We built a substantial business over a 10 year career with so many valuable business lessons along the way.

The birth of my daughter Hanna changed my perspective on what is important in life and with limited career opportunities in the family business, the ongoing 60 hour weeks, consistently dealing with staff issues and a clash of values around the demands of a job negatively impacting my health, I had a mid-life crisis at 28. I had 3 months off work and went and surfed and studied personal training………….it seemed a lot more sensible then an affair, a Ferrari and a moustache. As the heir to the family throne this was not well received, initially and the concept of working for $50 per hour, training people was hardly conceivable by my many critics at the time.

For the first time in my life I enjoyed the learning, the assignments and the concept that I could actually help people to better health. As the oldest attendee of the course by about 10 years and at 28 I did feel that some of my family advisors may have been right in that it was not possible to survive with a house mortgage, a wife, a new baby and a dog with this as new career. However I kept asking questions to those I respected in the industry and it was “how do I get started” Off course the trick was in getting clients, but in asking lots of questions I built the confidence to keep moving forward. As I whizzed through the PT course completing it in a couple of months I really thought I knew it all regarding the health, fitness and wellness and with my background in business I figured I could run a business. In hindsight it had only just begun…….

Following a trip to Coffs Harbour at the end of my 3 month sabbatical with my supportive wife, the decision was made to enter the PT world. In her words “life’s too short to die wondering, you will be fine, just give it your best and what can possibly go wrong”. I married someone who is very intelligent and passionately enthusiastic about life ( I think her Italian background has a lot to do with this) and her approval and advice was all I needed to keep moving forward.

“Until one is committed there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one elementary truth, the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then the Providence moves, too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events, issues from the decision, raising in one’s favour all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamt would have come his way. I have learned a deep respect for one of Goethe’s couplets: “whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it.? Boldness has genius, power and magic in it”

W.H Murray

It seemed Buddha, God, The Universe and every greater force pulled together and aligned me and my decision, as there was a series of coincidental occurrences. Firstly a random enquiry from a mates, mate who wanted to get fit for soccer, which resulted in my first client. Coincidentally he vomited during his first session with me, before signing up for 10 sessions !!! Within a week of that win, an opportunity about 5 minutes from my house at a Fitness First was ideal to launch and completely commit to making this work. With some great support and coaching I built to 20 + clients, within 4 weeks charging $60.00 per hour and loving my new freedom and life. Living healthy, learning and training others. This great lifestyle continued for 2 years before I learnt the most valuable business lesson in my business journey.

Personal Training as a business model is fundamentally flawed.

The birth of our son Kye came 8 weeks early and resulted in a 1.3kg really small, vunerable, sick baby who required intensive care and lots of love and support. My wife was violently sick and I will never forget the directness of the words of the doctor who pulled me aside during the early hours of the morning and said “you are at risk of losing your wife and your baby”. We pulled through that little battle some 12 weeks later when both Raquel and Kye were released from hospital at full health and in the very excited hands of big sister Hanna.

During this period my priority being a 2 year old, a big bull mastiff dog my sick wife and new growing son my business was put to the side. Coming back to work some 3 months later and following a traditional PT business model left me dealing with those unwanted overdue bills you receive in the letterbox that you don’t wish to open, the bank ringing me everyday wanting money and basically a big medical bill and no income. It was at this point I hit the crossroads…….do I go and get one of those job…..things, or do I get better at business. At this point I remembered a famous quote “don’t wish life was easier, wish you were better”. In getting the family back home, I then got completely committed to doing things smarter and working on getting better. I read self development books, listened to audio’s and worked in my strengths. I was limited in my knowledge of the different business models in health, fitness and wellness businesses even with my business background of building and running a $15 million dollar business. I needed to do something different and learn from someone who knew more than me and had an interest in my success.

“If you always do what you’ve always done and expect a different result, then this is a sign of insanity” Unknown

At this stage I needed a solution however, I was surrounded by a community of trainers all doing the same thing, swapping time for money. I needed some external advice, coaching, support and guidance on how to do it differently. Coincidentally it appeared, this time in the form of a mentor via a Fitness First workshop put together by Andrew May the owner of a business called PT Plus. I cant remember how I raised the $250.00 to get to the workshop but I did it. It was worth every cent as we went through mindset, strategy, creating revenue streams and a day full of so much value and insight. At the end of the workshop Andrew made an offer for 10 people to join him in his coaching program. In the negative cashflow position I grabbed one of the ten spots and it was the catalyst to create change as it was taking my commitment to a new level and delivering on what was important to me. Also ethically as a PT I was expecting someone to pay for my services so it seemed honourable that I do the same.

From here the road to becoming a “fitnesspreneur” lay ahead, that is someone who creates opportunity in business via offering health, fitness and wellness products and services that create a win/win for themselves and their clients.

During the last 7 years I have

  • Built a PT business to $30,000.00 per month
  • Managed Australia’s biggest gym with 50 personal trainers and 10000 members
  • Charge $500 per hour
  • Worked in elite sport with Cronulla Sutherland Rugby league, Australian Barracuda Swimming Team, Boxing trainer Johnny Lewis and dozens of elite athletes at various Olympic to weekend warrior levels.
  • Built my own boutique studio
  • Worked with some of Australia’s leading companies in their Corporate health programs including CB Richard Ellis, St George bank, Tynan Motors, various accounting and finance businesses, AMP, Morgan Stanley.
  • Managed a $100,000.00 national corporate health program
  • Present regularly throughout Australia, New Zealand and the UK
  • Write articles for PTonthenet, UltraFit, FitnessLife and various health and fitness publications
  • Overhauled 50 studios
  • Coached some of the leaders in the Health, Fitness and Wellness industry to peak performance
  • Interviewed 70 experts on their success habits
  • Developed 10 national award winning businesses
  • Work for leading studio and gym chains including Genesis, Vision Personal Training, Fitness First, Goodlife as well as Fitness New Zealand
  • Developed a business coaching model specific to personal trainers and studios with a 80% success rate for our clients
  • Work from home 80% of the time allowing me to drop the kids to school, be home for dinner and have a fantastic relationship with my wife
  • Play competitive sport and surf a few mornings a week
  • Overseas holidays a couple of times a year

Shortly after coming through the Andrew May program I bought the business from him as he pursued his passion of working in the corporate market and key note presenting. I built it from his initial 10 clients and a few products to an international business with a limited membership of 1000 people, 5 coaches, 120 annual business workshops and presenting at all the major conferences (disappointingly the exception is Filex due to political issues) throughout Australia, New Zealand and UK.

A lot of these achievements have been made possible by recruiting and developing some of the best coaches in the health, fitness and wellness industry.

Here are our team of amazing coaches

Dave Liow – New Zealand Coach

The most obvious attribute about Dave is his optimistic attitude. He claims he was born a trainer. When you hang around Dave, anything in life becomes achievable based on is his consistent attitude. His background of achievements include

  • Head of Performance for the New Zealand Black Sox baseball team
  • Same role with Hockey New Zealand in getting them to Commonwealth and Olympic Games
  • Head Trainer of the NZ Titleist Golf Academy
  • More qualifications in exercise and injury rehabilitation than a small university

With a very serious technical background, having studied every aspect of the human body, or so it seems, Dave has seen the light since working on himself and his business skills during the last 10 years. He now specialises in developing business systems, getting new trainers started and working with individuals in nailing a business goal.

I do not know of anyone who has worked as hard as Dave, in developing himself from a grunting, snorting semi -professional wrestler and lethal weapon, to being the family and business man who owns a multiple of health, fitness and business enterprises throughout Australia and New Zealand. He now obsesses about teaching this to those that step up to the plate and want the kind of beachside Sunshine Coast lifestyle that Dave and his wife and 2 beautiful daughters share, since migrating from Wellington New Zealand a few years ago. In fact within a few months of landing on the Sunshine Coast Dave, using our PT Plus business model had built his business to the equivalent of a 6 Figure turnover. He now teaches this to those that respect investing in themselves.

Aaron Whear – Victoria Coach

The strategist……….If there is anyone more strategic and as well planned then “Wheary” then please come forward. Aaron’s signature presentation at corporate events, conferences and in his coaching is titled “The Game Plan”. I personally have learnt from Aaron the skill of aligning your goals in your business with your actions. This seems like such an obvious thing to do yet so many people fail to get it right. Since his first job in the industry at the age of 15 Aaron has worked in every aspect of the health, fitness and wellness industry. From managing prestigious gyms like the grand old Melbourne City baths to sweeping and cleaning gym toilets ! Aaron has worked in most aspects of the industry. He now prides himself on training and developing new personal trainers well above the ordinary benchmark set by other training organisations in his education business

www.careerfitness.com.au

Away from health and fitness Aaron opens the batting at a regional level and rolls them arm over for a few wobbly ones in his beloved sport of cricket. Outside of sport Aaron has set up an amasing lifestyle with his wife Simone and 2 kids in beautiful Point Cook one of Melbournes coastal suburbs.

David Virgo - WA coach

The most impressive thing about David Virgo is his amasing lifestyle. He runs a 6 figure studio from his beautiful designer home in Morley Western Australia with his 3 kids and wife. Eating organic produce from the garden as well as having a real community feel to his place where kids play, people visit and friends hangout. Virgo’s work hours sit at around 20 hours per week. During this time he works on cool projects like his online cricket fitness programs, travelling to isolated parts of WA and delivering performance programs to the mining sector, mentoring some of the best young cricketers in the state and working with the next generation of personal trainers.

However you need to understand the reason behind the motivation to create an unbelievable lifestyle………..that was David being diagnosed and beating leaukemia. Now if you ask Virgo about this, he will waive it aside in a true country styled approach, a suggestion of his upbringing and get on with it attitude. He prefers to continue enjoying his great life. However his lesson in beating leaukemia he calls “Lifesperity” and that is teaching others about having an abundant lifestyle……..now………… Not waiting for the sun and the moon to align, next week or sometime later to create it, but now…….. by simply making the decision and then supporting it with small actions everyday. See David committed to beating leaukemia and he did it. He then decided he wanted a life, free from restrictions. A life free from money problems, free from work commitments, free from pain and getting the most from life. He is now committed to working with new PT’s and studio owners in being restriction free from their business, freeing up time to enjoy other parts of their life while having the dollars to fund what’s important to them.

Paul Strahl – Online guru

Paul is my personal online coach and one of the best in the online world. Having studied and hung out with the guru’s in the USA, Paul spends his spare time making robots! World.

Paul is needed in every business.

I have learnt from Paul, if you want to play the game of business in the modern world then you need to be actively online. In fact having an expensive brochure of a website just does not cut it in the year 2011. Having spent a 3 month ‘live in’ intensive with Paul, literally rolling up the sleeves and learning the basics on how to get started online (click here to go to this audio) to generating income (click here to go to this audio) to creating passive money online (click here to go to this audio) I am excited to be offering this great product and service throughout 2011 to help more businesses in this online area and offering some “live in intensives” with Paul and myself to help you jump the hurdles in being active online.
